Receiving one of these coveted awards is recognized as the highest honor a nominee can receive. The Academy itself is comprised of 6,000 directors, producers, actors and film industry professionals who recently cast their ballots. Nominee details have been released, but the winners will only be revealed on the night of the Oscars.

History

The Academy Awards’ inaugural ceremony took place in 1929 after Louis B. Mayer, former head of MGM studios, wanted to reward the best films of the year during a ceremony at the iconic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Ten years later, in 1939, the awards started to become known as the ‘Oscars’ – a moniker which, according to reports, was coined by Executive Director Margaret Herrick due to the infamous gold statue resembling her Uncle Oscar.
