The Newport Jazz Festival is a music festival held every summer in Newport, Rhode Island. The event will be held this year August 3-5, 2018 at the Fort Adams State Park.

History

The Newport Jazz Festival was established in 1954 by socialite Elaine Lorillard, who, together with husband Louis Lorillard, financed the festival for many years. The couple hired jazz impresario George Wein to organize the event to help them bring jazz to the resort town. Most of the early festivals were broadcast on Voice of America radio, and many performances were recorded and have been issued by various record labels. In 1972, the Newport Jazz Festival moved to New York City. In 1981, it became a two-site festival when it returned to Newport while continuing in New York.

Since its founding in 1954, many of the greatest jazz musicians alive have assembled here in Newport to delight listeners with the endless innovation and rich, deep traditions inherent in jazz. While many a record’s been produced through documenting the great performances at Newport through the decades, there’s nothing like being there. Those lucky enough to have seen and heard these sets live won’t forget the historic performances of Miles Davis and Duke Ellington in 1955 and 1956, respectively, or Nina Simone in 1960, or countless others since. You’re liable to see not only history in the making, but enjoy what’s become of the history already made.

Newport Jazz Festival founder George Wein (who also founded the influential Newport Folk Festival) always sought respect for jazz and jazz musicians. This was especially crucial in an era where many black jazz musicians were driven to the fringes of society, forced to endure an existence treated as second-class citizens. Newport encouraged jazz musicians to present itself unabashedly, unadulterated to the public at large.

Friday Kickoff

Thrown by the Foundation at the onset of the festival is Newport Jazz Friday, an evening concert at the open-air International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino.
