The 2019 US Open Tennis Championship will be held once again in Queens, New York. Since 1978, the tournament has been played on acrylic hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York City. For 3 weeks in late-August & early-September, the tennis world turns their full attention to Arthur Ashe Stadium as it plays annual host to the U.S. Open Tennis Championships. For over 100 years, tennis enthusiasts have traveled to Queens, NY to view the final major championship of the tennis “Grand Slam” season! Since 1987, the US Open has been chronologically the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the year. The other three, in chronological order, are the Australian Open, the French Open, and Wimbledon. The 2019 US Open will begin on Monday, August 26 and ends on Sunday, September 8th.
The tournament consists of five primary championships: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. The tournament also includes events for senior, junior, and wheelchair players. The US Open is the only Grand Slam tournament that employs tiebreakers in every set of a singles match. For the other three Grand Slam events, there are special scoring methods for a match that reaches 6–6 in the last possible set (the third for women and the fifth for men): in the French Open, the decisive set continues until a player takes a two-game lead, in Australia, an extended tiebreaker to 10 points is played, and at Wimbledon, a tiebreaker is played only if the game score reaches 12–12. As with the US Open, those events use tiebreakers to decide the other sets.
The US Open also is the only Grand Slam tournament with 16 qualifiers (instead of 12) in the women’s singles draw. The U.S. Open Tennis Championships have long been a coveted stage for the sport’s top talent to perform at their highest level. From all-time greats such as Arthur Ashe, John McEnroe, Steffi Graf and Pete Sampras, to recent legends such as Roger Federer and Serena Williams, only the best of the best will survive the toughest major of the year. In 2016, first time U.S. Open finalists ruled the day, as Stan Wawrinka upset defending men’s singles champion (and #1 seed) Novak Djokovic, while on the women’s side, newly-minted World #1 Angelique Kerber defeated Czech challenger Karolina Pliskova to win her first U.S. Open and second Major of the year!
